32,885 deaths and more than 2 million injuries are still unnecessary and unacceptable by any measure when there are public health solutions at hand to dramatically cut the highway mortality rates. Despite recent reductions, annual costs to society from motor vehicle crashes remain at more than $230 billion. And most of these costs are borne by states through Medicaid and other state medical charges.
